So today I installed Ubuntu Linux on my home desktop via Wubi installer that comes with the iso-burned CD. Logged in, great. Configured my wireless network settings. Perfect. Off to install/update software.
Downloaded:
- Firefox 3.0.1 installer – firefox-3.0.1.tar.bz2
- Skype 7.2 for Linux – skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb
- aMSN (MSN Messenger Clone) – amsn-0.97.1-1.tcl85.x86.package
Nice. As a true Linux newbie, and believing all the hype around “a true desktop linux for all” , I did what has become second nature to me: double-clicked each of the saved files on my desktop.
How many installed, you ask? ZERO!
K.I.S.S! Ubuntu Linux is NOT *nearly* ready for prime-time I’m afraid to say. And don’t tell me to hack away installing and/or configuring this stuff. I just needs to work out of the box. Period.
